• Reflexiones de Juicios Impertinentes (Reflections of Impertinent Judgments)

Casting reached out to me to read for Marco in Reflections -- a full Spanish speaking film that asked for a bit of piano work. A week and a half after my audition, I was offered the role. Marco was previously in a relationship with the lead character’s wife, Eliana, played by the lovely Maria J. Payares. The lead role of Lucas was played by the very affable Andrés Lagos. The film explores self-doubt, as it manifests in Lucas, a waning actor either prematurely past his prime or disillusioned about ever having one. Director Diego Ruiz de Velasco experiments with creating alter-egos out of the supporting characters -- a kind of a pessimistic consciousness incarnate.

Production secured a supper club in midtown replete with oxblood walls and tufted black booths, providing effectual ambience for the gala dinner scenes. I was engaged by the number of inebriated zombies traipsing around at 5:45am as I walked to set. The convenience of my commute was counterbalanced only by extemporary scene blocking dictated mostly by Marco’s waves, gestures and prop work. In addition to being the timekeeper, I needed to maintain my brain in Mexican Spanish mode. It was a very pleasant experience, despite the technical trickery required. The crew worked both quickly and efficiently. And the myriad background actors that populated the lounge did not go underappreciated. At one point, we nearly increased background talent, when tourists from the Midwest made an attempt at sitting at the bar.
